Sister Restaurants—Can't Decide Which One to Love More
Turkey and the Wolf, located in New Orleans' Irish Channel neighborhood, was named best new restaurant of the year by Bon Appetit Magazine in 2017. I remember reading the article and thinking, really, this is a weird choice by that magazine...so casual, a sandwich shop. But the piece was so intriguing, I'd had this restaurant on my list for years. This quote from Bon Appetit sums it up: Owner Mason Hereford is 'a cross between Jeff Spicoli from Fast Times at Ridgemont High and Willy Wonka.' It's like the funny stoner guy you knew in high school grew up to know exactly what you want to eat and then presented nostalgic 80s touches and amusements while you ate them.

The fried hand pie was like a McDonald's apple pie except with juicy chicken and a tangy dipping sauce—and yes, served on a vintage 1980s McDonald's melamine plate. The turkey sandwich, a wedge salad buried in toasted seeds and crispy lardons...sounds like your average menu, but it was astonishingly good. There are amusing touches like being handed a giraffe instead of a number at the pick-up counter. And, along with a glass of rose' where else would you expect to see a sour ale called TacoCat.
If you go, you may want to try a rainy day or an odd time. Turkey and the Wolf is popular for good reason. Expect to wait and expect to not care anymore once you get to take a bite.

MOLLY'S RISE AND SHINE
Breakfast of Champions
Walking around New Orleans all day takes energy...so power up with a giant breakfast! I was thrilled to discover that Molly's Rise and Shine was in the neighborhood walkable from our AirBnB, and even happier when I realized this is the sister restaurant to Turkey and The Wolf. To balance the sugar bomb cinnamon roll (the perfect gooey icing with soft and fluffy dough), we added on the sweet potato burrito which had a nice kick.
Molly's features even more 1980s memorabilia and kitsch with games, toys and posters to enjoy. The fun "number for your table" motif occurs here too, this time as a random sports trophy. Watch out when you pass the salt and pepper as they are glued on top of Hot Wheels cars. We could not leave have a trip to the South with biscuits and gravy—the picture is not pretty, but the taste was amazing. This is a do not miss meal.
